From the abyss to evolution 5
Elon Musk famously captured the psychological reality of building something ambitious when he said, "Being an entrepreneur is like eating glass and staring into the abyss."
For those who have never sat in the founder's seat, it sounds hyper-dramatic. For those who have built multi-million dollar portfolios, managed capital across decades, and then watched external forces pull the ground out from under them, it is an understatement.
Building a business exposes you to a level of vulnerability that few other professions demand. When failure hits, whether caused by litigation, internal betrayal, or external shocks, the fallout isn't just commercial. Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) in business is real, and until we speak openly about it, founders will continue to bleed in silence.
The Fair-Weather Crowd: From Sunlight to Darkness
One of the most brutal realities of the entrepreneurial journey is the social and relational whiplash that accompanies success and failure.
When you are achieving success, nearly everyone wants to be in your orbit. You are celebrated, courted, and praised. You still have your critics and haters, but they are drowned out by the noise of victory.
Then the tide turns.
When acute crisis hits, even when brought on by events entirely beyond your control, the room empties overnight. Worse, the very people who cheered your rise often become the first to attack, denigrate, or ignore you.
It throws you overnight from the warm sunlight of public validation into the cold, isolated darkness of a solo life journey. You quickly realize:
Internal betrayals cut deeper than external markets: Having team members or associates undermine the vision you funded and built leaves a lingering hyper-vigilance.
Public noise obscures private truth: Being attacked or mischaracterized in the public domain forces you to carry a false narrative while trying to fix underlying realities.
The "Hero to Zero" shift: The same ecosystem that praised your ambition will label your failure as a character flaw, ignoring systemic collapses or black-swan events.
When the Abyss Stares Back: 270 Days that Rewrote Everything
In my career, I spent decades building, managing, and scaling ventures across property development, private equity, and early-stage capital. By late 2019, C2 Capital in Melbourne had developed a pipeline with a gross realizable value exceeding $1 billion.
Then came Melbourne's 270 cumulative days of government-mandated COVID lockdowns, the longest of any major city globally.
It didn't just disrupt businesses; it effectively ended them. Watching a healthy, highly leveraged enterprise grind to an absolute halt due to zero-mobility mandates creates a profound sense of paralysis. I resigned my directorships to undergo a period of intense personal and commercial restructuring.
That season brought the full weight of business trauma:
- The constant, grinding anxiety of legal disputes and litigation.
- The emotional weight of unwinding decades of work.
- The deep, physiological Post-Traumatic Stress that comes from waking up every day to navigate firestorms while staring into an uncertain financial abyss.
- When your identity, network, and daily purpose are stripped away, you are forced to ask a question you can't avoid: Who am I when the noise stops, and what is a business in the world that's actually coming?
The Anatomy of the Comeback: Why Your Second Act Beats Your First
The distinction between those who are destroyed by business trauma and those who rebuild comes down to one thing: separating net worth from self-worth.
Failure is an event, not an identity. The scars earned through lockdown years, legal battles, public scrutiny, and staff betrayals are not signs of weakness. They are the brutal, compounding price of operational wisdom.
Every iconic comeback story is built on the foundation of a devastating collapse:
- Walt Disney faced bankruptcy when his first studio, Laugh-O-Gram, collapsed. He took a suitcase, moved to California, and started over.
- Steve Jobs was publicly ousted from Apple, the company he built, facing public humiliation before returning years later to execute the greatest turnaround in corporate history.
- Nick Woodman lost millions during the dot-com crash with his first start-up before recalibrating to build GoPro.
A devastating setback forces a new architecture. For most of my career, growth meant bigger teams, bigger balance sheets, and traditional infrastructure. But the old playbook doesn't hold anymore.
Crossing through the darkness gave me the freedom to move to the Gold Coast, strip away outdated operating models, and build V1 Scale and the SynAgentics framework. By leveraging Evolution 5 AI and agentic technology, I built a lean, resilient enterprise where vision is orchestrated by humans and execution is amplified by digital systems: a business model completely immune to the structural vulnerabilities of the past.
Reclaiming Your Story
If you are currently sitting in the darkness, if you are dealing with litigation, public misunderstanding, financial strain, or the aftermath of a collapsed business, understand this:
Acknowledge the Trauma: Do not pretend eating glass doesn't hurt. Treat post-traumatic stress with the seriousness it deserves so it doesn't run your next move.
Filter the Noise: Let the people who walked away stay gone. The crowd that only cheers in the sunlight has no place in your rebuild.
Focus on the Next Decimal Point: You do not need to rebuild the entire empire today. Rebuild your health, secure your inner circle, and execute micro-wins daily.
The abyss is deep, but it is not permanent. The scars, insights, and battle-tested judgment you gain while crawling out of the dark are the exact tools required to make your Second Act infinitely more powerful than your First.

Compelling future
Before strategy, structure or capital, we go deep on what's actually driving you, the truth that still matters on the hardest day of building this. Once named, we align it with where your business is going, so every decision pulls from the same source of energy.
Apex Mindset
Meta Vision
We help you design your north star, a precise destination, not a vague ambition, that every decision can be measured against. Once it's set, your business stops reacting and starts moving with intent, building toward a high value business or exit you actually chose.
Venture Design
Every build decision gets tested against speed and efficiency, not perfection, so what comes out the other end isn't just real, it's extraordinary.
SynAgentics Organisational Design
We build your organisation for the future today, structuring humans and Agentics to work side by side, not as a tool bolted on, but as a genuine team. Once that structure is in place, your business can 10X its performance without 10X-ing headcount, more output, same lean team.
Tech Stack Design
We build the platforms and tools that power a lean, automated business from the ground up, every layer chosen to work together, not against each other. The result is optimal performance flowing straight to your top and bottom line, less friction, more output.
Blitz Marketing
We run marketing and sales together, engineered with cut-through media built to break through fast, not blend in. The result hits your next decimal milestone quickly, with a deeper bottom line behind it, speed and substance, not one at the cost of the other.
Capital Stack Architecture
We model your cap table, design your global structuring, and architect a capital stack built to attract serious growth funding, not just survive due diligence, but command it. Once it's right, capital stops being a hurdle and becomes the fuel that carries you straight toward your meta vision.
